Make a weekend of it! Novi Sad — the "Serbian Athens" and a recent European Capital of Culture — is compact, relaxed and best explored on foot, with a glass of local wine never far away.
The "Gibraltar on the Danube" — a vast 18th-century fortress overlooking the river, famous for its clock tower whose hands are reversed (the big hand shows hours, so fishermen could read the time from afar). Wander the ramparts, explore the artists' ateliers, and stay for sunset. This is also the home of the EXIT festival.
